Chapter 8: Post-treatment of new skis or newly stone ground skis

Newly ground skis need some basic treatment for optimal performance. This process depends partly on the grind patterning given to the base. Here's our guide.

Newly ground skis need some basic treatment for optimum performance. This process depends partly on the grind patterning given to the base, as cold snow patterns need more extensive treatment than wet snow patterns. You'll learn more about it here.

Skis with fine structure for cold conditions

All irregularities and microhairs must be removed from the base for cold snow patterns. Our experience is that the grinding process has improved in the last few years, and using Fibertex (T264 or T264N) is less necessary than before. But we still recommend making some strokes with Fibertex for cold and dry conditions to ensure you remove all microhairs. Polish some times forth and back on the base before following the steps below.

Products needed

Skis with a medium structure for normal conditions:

To treat your skis with a medium structure, here's what you need to do:

  1. Brush lightly with the Steel Brush (T0179) or Bronze Brush (T0162).
  2. Moisten a piece of Fiberlene (T0150) with Glide Wax Cleaner (I84N) and apply it to the glide zone of the base.
  3. Rub forward and backward a few times with a fine steel brush, T191B.
  4. Wipe off as much as possible with Fiberlene (T0150). Let the ski dry for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Brush firmly with the Steel brush (T0179) or Bronze Brush (T0162) in a tip-to-tail direction. The ski is now ready for glide wax application.
  6. Saturate the base with relatively soft wax, such as BP99 or PS10. The temperature of the waxing iron should be regulated to be hot enough to give immediate melting of the wax. Approximately 120°C (248°F).
  7. Start at the ski tip and move the iron in one continuous motion toward the tail. This technique prevents overheating the base.
  8. Cool to room temperature (minimum 10 minutes, but longer time, for example overnight, is positive). Scrape off with a sharp plexi scraper (T0823D/T0824D/T0825D). It is important to use a sharp scraper. High pressure with an unsharp scraper can make the structure unsharp.
  9. Use the Coarse Brush (T0162) or Steel Brush (T0179). Use the brush in a tip-to-tail direction approx. 5-10 times.
  10. Apply PS06, iron in, and wait a minimum of 10 minutes. Iron in three times. Apply more wax if necessary. No scraping in between. Iron temperature approx. 140°C (280°F). This will make the “micro hairs” stick to the hard PS06 wax and be removed when scraping and brushing.
  11. Cool to room temperature (minimum 10 minutes). Scrape off with a sharp plexi scraper (T0823D/T0824D/T0825D). Use the Bronze Brush (T0162) or Steel Brush (T0179). Use the brush in a tip-to-tail direction approx. 5-10 times.
  12. Repeat steps 10-12 at least one more time. For cold conditions skis, you can repeat steps 10-12 several times more.

Skis with coarse structure

For these types of skis, with a coarse structure for warm conditions, we want to keep the structure sharp and work less with wax iron and scraping. This also goes for skis with a transparent base.

  1. Brush lightly with the Steel Brush (T0179) or Bronze Brush (T0162).
  2. Moisten a piece of Fiberlene (T0150) with Glide Wax Cleaner (I84N) and apply it to the glide zone of the base.
  3. Rub forward and backward a few times with a fine steel brush, T191B.
  4. Wipe off as much as possible with Fiberlene (T0150). Let the ski dry for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Brush firmly with the Steel brush (T0179) or Bronze Brush (T0162) in a tip-to-tail direction. The ski is now ready for glide wax application.
  6. Apply PS06, iron in, and wait a minimum of 10 minutes. Iron in three times. Apply more wax if necessary. No scraping in between. Iron temperature approx. 160°C.
  7. Cool to room temperature (minimum 10 minutes). Scrape off with a sharp plexi scraper (T0823D/T0824D/T0825D).
  8. Use the Bronze Brush (T0162) or Steel Brush (T0179). Use the brush in a tip-to-tail direction approx. 5-10 times.
  9. The skis are now ready to use the race wax. Liquid waxes are often used in these conditions.
  10. We recommend ironing waxes not too often on skis with coarse structure for warm conditions and recommend BPL for travel and protection of the base. This will keep the structure sharper over time.
