Chapter 10: Mastering Marathon glide waxes

Marathon is our several years preferred wax for long-distance races like Birkebeinerrennet, Vasaloppet, and Marcialonga. They perform well even when the temperatures and snow vary throughout the race course.

Our Marathon glide waxes are incredibly durable and designed to endure longer distances. The unique blend of premium waxes and a special organic-inorganic hybrid material provides Marathon with a rare combination of hydrophobicity, low coefficient of friction, and extreme durability.

Therefore, Marathon has for several years been the preferred fluoro-free wax for long-distance races like Birkebeinerrennet, Vasaloppet, and Marcialonga. They perform well even when the temperatures and snow vary throughout the race course. Marathon can be used alone or as a base for other waxes, such as solids applied with wool or liquids. Marathon is also well suited for long days in the alpine resorts and extended backcountry ski trips.

White Marathon (DHFF) and White Marathon Powder (DHP) perform well in all snow types but excel in transformed and artificial snow.

In dirty snow, or when there is more dirt and solid particles from trees or other sources in the snow, the Black Marathon (DHBFF) or the Black Marathon Powder (DHBP) will be the best choice.

We recommend applying White and Black Marathon Powder (DHP and DHBP) using a high-quality waxing iron to melt the wax efficiently. The speed of the waxing iron should be approx. 8-10 seconds for a skating or alpine ski. The wax can be reheated after cooling to room temperature (10 min.) for better durability. Scrape and brush after waiting about ten minutes or more. The recommended waxing iron temperature is 155°C.

Remember to use a sharp scraper.

Roto Wool - an easy and innovative waxing method that offers excellent performance

The composition and hardness of Marathon waxes make them optimal for roto wool application.

For the best performance in cold and dry new snow, we recommend applying a top layer of Marathon glider using roto wool: no ironing and no finish brushing. Doing this will increase the glide and give a fantastic feeling on the skis:

  1. Clean and refresh the base structure lightly with a fine steel brush. We recommend T0191B since it cleans deep into the ski base structure.
  2. Apply the Marathon glider to the roto wool by pressing the wax block against half the width of the roto wool while running the drill at a low speed.
  3. Use the waxed side of the roto wool on the ski with medium pressure and medium drill speed. Start with the back of the ski and continue with the front.
  4. Finish off by polishing the whole ski with the clean side of the roto wool. Use very light pressure and maximum drill speed.
