With a Norwegian father, skiing was always a part of Sophia's childhood, but only as a recreational activity. Winters spent skiing with family was more about fun than competition, and her childhood dreams did not involve elite sports. "I never pictured myself as a professional skier," she admits. "Skiing was something we did when there was enough snow."
Sophia's perspective changed dramatically in college, where her skiing talent quickly became apparent. Her first year marked a turning point as she improved rapidly, leading to her first international competition at the Junior World Championships. "It was a total shock," Sophia recalls. With her newfound skills, she started to view skiing as more than just a winter hobby, and soon, a series of unexpected opportunities opened.
Following her first junior worlds, she earned a spot in the 2022 Olympics—a surreal experience that felt worlds away from her original plans. "I went to college thinking I'd just get a normal job," she says. "But the opportunities kept coming, and committing when you get better becomes easier."
Now, as a Swix athlete racing with our poles, Sophia feels ready to take on the World Championships in Trondheim. Racing on Norwegian snow brings a special significance for her, not only because of her heritage but also because Trondheim is known for its deep skiing tradition. Competing here is a personal and professional milestone reflecting her journey from a casual skier to an elite Team USA athlete.
