How to choose the right training apparel for spring

Spring is unpredictable. It can be 12°C and sunny on your morning run, and 4°C with wind by the evening session. The right training apparel means you don’t have to think about the weather – just the workout.

Here’s what you need to know.

Layering – simpler than you think

The most important principle for spring training is being able to adapt. You don’t need five layers. You need two to three pieces that do the job:

A baselayer that moves sweat away from your body. A jacket or vest that blocks wind but lets heat escape. Tights or pants that give you freedom of movement without overheating.

The Swix Performance collection is built for this. Every piece is tested by athletes who train year-round – from the ski trail to the road. Light enough for intense sessions, tough enough to handle switching between activities on the same day.

Spring training is the most varied period of the year for me. I run, cycle and do strength – sometimes on the same day. The clothes need to handle everything without me having to change between sessions.

Jacket or vest?

Rule of thumb: If you spend most of your time moving – running, cycling, roller skiing – choose a vest. It protects your core without overheating your arms. If you’re doing more stationary training, or training early or late in the day, choose a lightweight jacket.

Swix Performance jackets use breathable fabrics that are light enough for intervals, but offer enough protection so you don’t freeze on the way home. The vests weigh next to nothing and pack down into a pocket when you don’t need them.

In short: Vest when you know you’ll stay warm. Jacket when you’re not sure.

Tights: long or short?

Above 10°C? Short tights or shorts will do for most people. Below 10°C, or during intervals where you’re standing still between reps? Long tights.

The Performance tights have a fit designed for high-tempo movement. No chafing, no riding up. They work just as well on roller skis as on a run.

I wear the Performance tights from March to November. They work just as well on roller skis as on a run.

Baselayer – the most important piece you’re wearing

The baselayer is the most underrated piece in your training wardrobe. A poor baselayer traps sweat against your skin – and then you freeze when you stop.

Swix RaceX is made to transport moisture fast. It’s been the first choice for athletes across multiple sports for years. Lightweight, breathable, and holds up wash after wash without losing shape or function.

Tip: A good baselayer does more for your comfort than an expensive jacket. Start there.

RaceX also works perfectly as an outer layer on warm days. One piece, every workout.

Checklist: What you need for spring training

Baselayer in synthetic material that dries fast (e.g. RaceX)

Lightweight jacket or vest – depending on activity and temperature

Tights – long below 10°C, short above

Headband or light beanie for early morning sessions

Lightweight gloves for the coldest days in April

Spring is when the foundation is laid. This is when the best athletes build the fitness that decides the winter season. With the right clothes, you don’t need to think about what you’re wearing – just the session.
